Brevard Public Schools

Parents should always have a role in their children’s education – make your voice heard!

Brevard Public Schools will hold a School Board primary election on August 23, 2022.

District 1 residents will choose between 3 candidates: Megan Wright, Misty Belford, and Roy Gainer Jr. If a candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in August, that candidate will be declared the winner and there will not be a general election for District 1 in November. If all 3 candidates receive less than 50% of the vote, then only the top 2 candidates will proceed to a general election on November 8.

District 1 Candidates

Megan Wright is a mother of two and the founder of a company which provides care to individuals born with developmental disabilities.

Wright supports parental rights, noting that “parents have a fundamental liberty in determining the care and upbringing of their children.”

Wright opposes Critical Race Theory in K-12 classrooms.

Wright’s priorities include teaching trades in school, implementing stricter disciplinary policies, increasing teacher salaries, and establishing greater transparency for the district’s budget.

Wright attended the signing of the “Curriculum Transparency Bill,” which requires school districts to be transparent in the selection of instructional materials.

Misty Belford is a mother of two and is the current District 1 School Board Member and Chairperson. She is also a survival swim instructor and volunteers with various parent groups in the school system.

Belford claims to support parental rights in education but says that there is a difference when “we have to make decisions for the whole.”

The Brevard County Sheriff’s office wrote Belford to inform the Board that they would not enforce public speaking policies. Previously Belford would “read a warning…telling members of the public they could be arrested if they disrupted the meeting.”

Belford is endorsed by Families for Safe Schools which supports candidates who “understand that the rights of LGBTQ students must be protected, and that all children deserve to see themselves represented in the curriculum and to learn the truth about our history.”
